I’VE GOT A CASE OF THE “NEEDHAMS”!
It is a very complex
disease. It causes me to read and
re-read over and over again old stuff.
There are so many of them and the evidence in the courthouses doesn’t
point you exactly to which one they belong to sometimes. Well, it’s about time that we who represent
a NEEDHAM to STAND UP AND CLAIM YOUR NEEDHAM.
You of the particular bloodline of a particular NEEDHAM, please come to
the rescue of those of us who have a case of the “NEEDHAMS”!
You know you wouldn’t think that the odd name of NEEDHAM MCLENDON would cause such a stir. You have to admit that it is odd. Therefore, you would hope that because of its oddness, it would be easy to locate. Not like the common names of James, John, and Dennis. Whew! There are a lot of Dennises in the McLendon history. I’ve found the given name NEEDHAM spelled in many ways: NEEDHAM, NEADHAM, and NEESHAM. For there to be 9 of them born between 1782 and 1849, there would have to be a cousin relationship going on here. You know where one person in the family names his child NEEDHAM and then later on, his brother or cousin down the line names their child NEEDHAM as well, and so on, and so on, and so on.
Well, let’s start with listing the NEEDHAMs
that are causing such havoc. There were
2 born in South Carolina, 1 born in Mississippi, about 5 born in Georgia, and 2
with middle names. If only all of them
had middle names, this procedure would at least help to ease the pain of
piecing the jigsaw puzzle together, like putting nametags in the collars of
their shirts.
1.
NEEDHAM MCLENDON born 1782 in South Carolina who
married POLLY SEARS. It is said that
his parents were EPHRIAM ELIJAH MCLENDON 1750 and ELIZABETH TOMLINSON.
2. NEEDHAM
MCLENDON born 1800 in South Carolina who married 3 times, first, to MARGARET
DILL, then secondly, to ISABELLA BAREFIELD, and thirdly, to HARRIET
JORDAN. I propose that his father is
WILLIAM MCLENDON 1728, eldest son of DENNIS MCLENDON 1702 and MARTHA DUNN.
3. NEEDHAM
MCLENDON born 1818 in Laurens County, Georgia.
His parents were NEEDHAM MLENDON 1782 and POLLY (MARY) SEARS.
4. NEEDHAM
MCLENDON born 1833 (need birthplace).
His parents were DENNIS MCLENDON AND MARTHA “PATSY” TISON who themselves
were born in Georgia.
5. NEEDHAM
DAVID MCLENDON 1834 born in Early Co, GA.
His parents were NEEDHAM MCLENDON 1800 AND MARGARET ELIZABETH “BETSY”
DILL 1800.
6. NEEDHAM
MCLENDON born 1846 in Simpson County, Mississippi. His parents are listed as WILLIAM MCLENDON 1767 born in North
Carolina and BARBARA REBECCA AARON born in Orangeburg District, South Carolina.
7. NEEDHAM
MCLENDON born 1849 (need birthplace), died young of fever. His parents were NEEDHAM MCLENDON 1818 and
HARRIET SEARS.
8. NEEDHAM
B. (BUCK) MCLENDON born 1856 Mississippi.
His parents were Isham McClendon and Mary Miles.
9. NEEDHAM
HOLMES MCLENDON born 1858 in Early County, Georgia. His parents were JOHN MCLENDON and SUSAN ANNE ELIZABETH MCLAIN.
So there, I’ve listed them. Are you confused yet?
These people line up into 3 different camps under
the great McLendon ancestral tree, so far, sharing a common ancestry.:
1.
Those descended from DENNIS MCLENDON 1702 and
MARTHA DUNN, the son of DENNIS MECKLENDEN 1680 and MARGARET MARY EARLY 1683.
q
1800 NEEDHAM MCLENDON
q
1834 NEEDHAM DAVID MCLENDON
q
1846 NEEDHAM MCLENDON
q
1858 NEEDHAM HOLMES MCLENDON
2. Those
descended from EPHRIAM ELIJAH MCLENDON 1750 and ELIZABETH TOMLINSON. ELIZABETH was the daughter of WILLIAM
TOMLINSON, and the granddaughter of JOSIAH TOMLINSON. I do not know as yet how this EPHRIAM ELIJAH MCLENDON hooks into
the great McLendon ancestral tree. His ancestors are being discussed and
debated now. Soon we will find out who
these mystery parents are.
q
1782 NEEDHAM MCLENDON
q
1818 NEEDHAM MCLENDON
q
1833 NEEDHAM MCLENDON
q
1849 NEEDHAM MCLENDON
3. Those
descended from ISHAM MCLENDON and MARY MILES (1827 SC) who married 15 December
1853 in Rankin County, Mississippi.
ISHAM’S ancestry is still being discussed and debated. We need help in going back through his ancestry. Can anyone help us out? 1856 NEEDHAM B. (BUCK) MCLENDON
SO WHERE DO YOU STAND IN THIS LINE-UP? SIGN-IN PLEASE!!
EVIDENCE!! WE NEED EVIDENCE!
This is our anguished cry! Well,
there is evidence all around. What we
have to do is figure out which piece of evidence goes under which NEEDHAM.

I. ABOUT NEEDHAM MCLENDON 1800
HIS ANCESTORS:

Note: Ezekiel McLendon moved to
Anson County, North Carolina with his father when he was about nine years old.
He was a large land owner in Anson County. His homestead was on Brown Creek.
Part of his land fell in Montgomery County in 1779, when they formed Montgomery
County from Anson County. According to old Army Accounts Books of North
Carolina, page 45, Ezekiel McLendon was listed as a Revolutionary Soldier.
FROM THE LEONARDO ANDREAS PAPERS
3. The
first mention of the name McClendon is in the parish register of Pr. Frederick
Episcopal Church of Craven County...This church was
then located along the present boundary of
Georgetown and Williamsburg counties south of the Pee Dee River and on the
Black River...This church
served as the parish church from 1715 to 1760 for all of Craven County. In Craven County were also congregations of Presbyterian and Baptist
churches at that time.
4.
Baptized to DENNIS McCLENDEN and his wife Martha.

years last April. (This would be 5-3)
q
Enoch McClenden the 2nd day of Dec. 1753, and 1
year old last Dec 28th. (This would be 5-5)
q
Zelphia Girk (Kirk) McClenden on the 2nd Day of
Dec. 1753 and born ye 28th (Month missing) 1748. (This would be 5-4)
4-1 Dennis McLendon and wife Martha residence
of Bishopville, Lee Co., S. C. Dennis
McClendon probably died abt 1784. April 17, 1784, Dennis McClendon’s property
was appraised and recorded in Book A,
Page 130-31. Dennis McClendon,
dec'd 1784, Camden county, S. C. and
John Stone on the right of his wife, Martha Stone, appointed administrator of
the estate. Dennis McClendon was arrested in 1780 for being a tory.
5-1 William McLendon, see sale of land in Darlington Co., S. C.
By John Stone and wife Martha, and
signed by William McLendon, eldest son of Dennis McClendon.dec'd William was
probably born about 1740-41, and may be earlier.
5-2 Jesse McLendon b abt 1742-3
5-3 Francis McLendon b 1745
5-4 Zelpha Kirk McLendon b 1750
5-5 Enoch McLendon b 1752
5-6
Lewis McLendon (McClendon)
of Sumter Co., S. C. will of 1817 is said to have been a son of Dennis McLendon
and wife Martha, by some Martha McLendon, wife of Dennis, was probably married
1740 or earlier. If she were 18 years of age when married then she was born
about 1722. Then she would have been 62 years old in 1784.
44 Estate
of Dennis McClendon and Admst. 8 Mar. 1784 by his widow, Martha McClendon...Her
bond was sg. by John Hobirt & Burrell Boykin... Appraisers were listed as William Spivey, David Robinson &
Charles Price. Later on...Martha McClendon, widow of Dennis McClendon, deceased
in 1782, shows as now (1784) as being married to JOHN STONE.* *I checked all Stone wills in the files to
see if I could find any McClendon data in them...I found none, save as
witnesses twice.
46 John
Stone and his wife, Martha Stone and WILLIAM McCLENDON, eldest son and heir of
DENNIS McCLENDON, now deceased, all join in a joint deed 13 Jan. 1786, a tract
of land, granted to Dennis McClendon dated 13 Jan. 1775 to James Rembert on the
Great Road to Georgetown. /Wit. William Cook, Jesse McClendon & William
Dyches. said land lying upon Spring Branch.
*Refer back to #12 and to #s16 & 17 and NOTE no grant for 8 Feb. 1775 I see now in that deed, that Miss Revill does not place this in the deed proper but merely states "Dennis McClendon had a land grant 8 Feb. 1775" *
46a Here
it seems that the only heirs of Dennis McClendon #44 were his widow....Martha
McClendon m. John Stone, William
McClendon, the eldest son and heir. Jesse McClendon.
Since this deed was in 1785, the law of
primogeniture, by which an eldest son heired all the estate when the father
died intestate, that law was
then out of date (However in some instances it
continued until after the adoption of the U.S. Constitution)
48
Miss
Revill states that this Dennis #44 resided in Darlington Co. at Poplarsville,
now Bishopville...she states that this Dennis is the same Dennis #4...she also
states that he was the son of John McClendon whose widow was named Mary and
left a will which I number as #10 and Revill gives same as I gave in
#10...Again Revill mentions that Mary may have been a widow of an earlier
Dennis McClendon.
53 The

the age of 16......2nd # indicates how many males under age of 16.....3rd #

Darlington Distrist SC census has McLendons spelled as “MLendal” : Dennis, William, and John MLendal, and Asa
Barefield
(Here
is an interesting fact – Needham’s daughter married Hugh G. Barefield (born
1819 NC), son of Allen Sommersett Barefield and Catherine ___________. They have a son named Asa Barefield born
December 13, 1846 in Georgia. I bet a
dime to a donut hole that Hugh G Barefield (1819) and the Asa Barefield in the
1800 SC census are some kind of kin!)
1810
Darlington District SC census has William McLendon
“DARLINGTON

moved to Fort Gains, Ga. This Family stated to me Needham was from Darlington
Dist. in S. C. and was a very large family of boys. A number of brothers
migrated over to Ala., and then went to Miss. In Miss. some become dissatisfied,
and returned to Ala. and Ga. and some returning to S. C. Some of these liked
Miss. and stayed there. Needham afterwards visited his kin back in Miss. but
they did not know their names nor what part of Miss. They lived.
Wm.
McClendon, Sr., had 11 slaves, Hancock Co., Ga., 1792-1818. Wm. was considered
perhaps the largest planter in Hancock Co., at that time. He probably left Ga
for parts unknown. He may be the Wm. above.

In
the 1820 Darlington District, South Carolina census are these people: JAMES;
DENNIS; JESSE; and WILLIAM MCLENDON.
(NEEDHAM MCLENDON is not listed there, probably because he had moved to
Wayne County, Mississippi. He would
have been around age 25. He stayed in
Mississippi and had some children there.)

female age 26-45 (born between 1775-1794) MARGARET DILL MCLENDON
female age 10-16 (born between 1804-1810)
female age 16-26 (born between 1794-1810)
2 females, 1 male ages up to 10 (born between 1800-1810)
By
the records we already have on Needham's children by Margaret Dill, there would
only be 2 children listed in the 1820 census.
However, the 1820 Wayne County, Mississippi census has 5 children living
in his household. This census was taken
on the 1st Monday in August in 1820.
John was born 6 August 1819 and William was born after the census was
taken on 27 December 1820. Therefore,
Needham had more children in the house than he sired, and of whom no one seems
to talk about. This Needham was on the
same page as William McLendon, p. 115, Wayne Co., MS census
100001-21110-0. There were no slaves
listed for either of them. William and
Job Dill were in the same census with Needham here in Mississippi.
Job
was Margaret Dill’s father.
Needham had a son WILLIAM (1820) MCLENDON who was born 27 Dec 1820 Wayne Co,
Mississippi-28 Feb 1901 Early Co, GA, buried Bethel Church Cemetery, Early Co,
GA. His daughter -MARY POLLY MARGARET MCLENDON was born 4 Oct 1822 Mississippi;
and his son SILAS MCLENDON was born 3 Oct 1824 Mississippi-bef 1872 GA. Then he moved to Georgia.

time to work backwards on Needham’s ancestry more.

Catherine. William McClendon b. 1800 (His Bible is still in existance) m. 1st
to Nancy Moore, (Dtr. of Anthony & Kesiah Moore) and the Bible states "William McClendon married on the

Black Creek Waters in Darling- Co.

was married second to Barbara Rebecca Aaron 10 Sept. 1839 by Isaac Evans J.P. on Waters of O-Papa-Hatch-a
in Rankin Co. Miss, the daughter of William & Barbara Aaron.
I hardly think this William is same as #86 who in 1815

married until 1819.....This William did have a son, Needham McClendon b. 1846
as noted from the Bible.
84 DENNIS McCLENDOL and his wife, Delilah (Beasley) McClendol...Mar 1810 in Darlington,,a deed to James McClendol, my brother,,a tract of land beginning at old William Jones' Footway on Burnt Branch..down said McClendol's old line and being part of the original grant to Daniel DuBose /Wit. Elijah Walters & William Williamson....This Dennis McClendon was married twice...first to Delilah Beasley and second to Anna _____. 85 B-407, DENNIS & DELILAH McCLENDAL, 20 Nov. 1809, for love and affection I have for my brother, James McClendal, a deed for 60a of land on Burnt Branch, being a portion of the 300a org. gtrd. to Daniel Bubose. /Wit. Elijah Walters & William Williamson,,,,Same as #84
90 I was unable to determine when DENNIS McLENDON of Sparrow Swamp was married to Delilah Beasley......20 Feb. 1792, Dennis McLendon and no dower sold lands to John McNish (F-386) and said land being 100a on Jeffrey Creek by lands of Harris, Cobb, John Muldrow & John McCown /Wit. Orion Hinds & Latimore Edmunds.....Delilah Beasley begins after 1792 to join Dennis in his deeds after 1792, until in 1822..11 Feb. 1825, DENNIS McLENDON and this time with no dower by Delilah, deeds lands to William King Sr...said lands conveyed to me 10 May 1785 by Daniel Dubose (And note DuBose in #85) and bounded by lands of the Widow Walters, Joseph J. Fort & Giles Halleman (See Ann M. Hollaman in #87)...at the same date he also deeds lands of the DuBose tract to SILAS HOLLEMAN
95 Some of the children of DENNIS McCLENDON and his wife, DELILAH BEASLEY Catherine McClendon b. 1792 in S.C. and m. Daniel Beasley & removed to Simpson Co. >My grandmother was Jennie Maude McLendon, born Aug 7, 1884 died Sept 4, 1925 daughter of Pollard and Cemantha Elizabeth Davis McLendon. She married James Harris Stephens. Pollard, Cemantha and Jennie are all buried at Red Bluff Baptist chruch in Laurens Co., Ga. I have a lot of information on the McLendon family, yet I know that some of it is not exactly correect. I would be glad to share information with you. Louise Snowden e-mail wtls @Mail Cairo Net. Com

Hi:
Apparently I am a cousin. I descend from Needham McLendon, b. ca 1782
and Mary (Polly)Elizabeth Sears, b ca 1793 through their son, Pollard McCormick
McLendon and Eliza Ann Thigpen, on one side and through their daughter Cemantha
McLendon and Thomas Andrew Davis on the other side. In other words I get a
double portion because I am descended from Needhan and Mary Elizabeth Sears
McLendon through two of their children.
I would be very interested in Knowing how you descend from them. I look
forward to hearing from you. My e-mail address is db1202@aol.com Dane Jason
Bennett.
